In recent years, Asian countries have achieved high economic growth.
At the same time, however, these countries are experiencing a widening disparity of wealth, and deepening social divisions. The destruction of the natural environment, abnormal climate and serious natural disasters are occurring everywhere and every year.
In order to enable truly sustainable development in each region, we focus on identifying the fundamental issues and delivering effective assistance with a system that the local people can manage by themselves.
We seek to enable local people to create a better life for themselves after external support is over. We believe that children will be able to live in a better environment and walk forward with confidence in the possibilities of the future.
What FIDR values greatly is
The staff of FIDR walk the project sites looking closely the real situations with their own eyes. We listen carefully to what local people say. FIDR and local people have discussions repeatedly, deepen our understanding of each other, and learn from each other. In this way, FIDR and the local people are bound by a strong relationship of trust, and foster a genuine capacity building and a functioning network in the local communities, which will lead steady development of the region.
FIDR investigates, analyze, and clarifies what the root causes of the issues are. We also value how local people think and what kind of future they envision. By doing so, we can see the form of support that is truly needed. We share this idea with the local people and implement projects.
FIDR invites experienced experts and researchers in their respective fields to serve as mentors or advisors in the survey as well as implementation of projects to ensure that the knowledge and skills of local people are enhanced. FIDR staff involved in the administration and operation of projects also acquire not only knowledge of their area of responsibility, but also management methods from planning to post-project evaluation and facilitation techniques, always aiming to work with a high level of expertise.
In our activities, we make maximum use of resources, including local human resources, wisdom and experience, and socio-cultural resources available in the local society. We also place the highest value on the ownership of local residents and organizations and encourage them to take the initiative. By doing so, even after FIDR has completed its support, local people will be able to think for themselves and further improve local issues.
FIDR sets goals together with local people and adjusts its plans and procedures according to the situation as it works with them to ensure that the issues it addresses are indeed improved. In the process, the local people will repeat successful experiences: “I myself can do it.” The learning and confidence gained from the accumulation of these experiences will serve as a "model" and spread to other areas. The wave of change is transmitted from person to person and region to region.
