"Pediatric surgery" is the medical field that deals with treating neonate, infants, and young children who require surgery due to illnesses or injuries. Currently, there are still limited numbers of hospitals in Cambodia that equip appropriate functions to handle pediatric surgery. One of the main factors is a shortage of specialized doctors and skillful nurses who can accurately diagnose and appropriately treat these surgical conditions. As a result, children who might recover regrettably end up losing their lives or suffering lifelong disabilities due to inadequate medical care in their local hospitals.
Cambodia has one of the highest child mortality rates in Southeast Asia. The nearly two decades of civil war from 1970, particularly the oppressive rule of the Khmer Rouge regime from 1975 to 1979, resulted in the loss of almost all medical facilities and healthcare workers nationwide. Since 1980, with assistance from various countries, the training of doctors and nurses and the restoration of medical facilities have gradually progressed. However, there has been limited international support specifically for highly specialized pediatric surgery.
Therefore, FIDR recognized the need to establish the field of pediatric surgery in Cambodia. Since 1996, FIDR has been working in collaboration with the National Pediatric Hospital in Phnom Penh to improve the quality of pediatric surgical care and establish a solid medical system. Through two decades of effort, Cambodian surgeons and anesthesiologists have now become capable of managing medical services domestically.
Since 2017, FIDR has expanded its activities to strengthen pediatric surgical care in rural areas, selecting Kratie Province in northeastern Cambodia as a model region. With many children still unable to access proper medical care in rural Cambodia, efforts are being made to develop human resources for adequate surgical care and establish systems for patient transport.
In northeastern Cambodia, FIDR is establishing a pediatric surgical care system based at Kratie Provincial Hospital to ensure that children receive proper diagnosis and surgical treatment.
Cambodia, Kratie Province
April 2023 to March 2028 (planned) (Total project duration: October 1996 to March 2028)
In Cambodia, where the field of pediatric surgery was not established, FIDR has been gradually training surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nurses, and improving medical facilities. From 1996 to 2016 in the basis of National Pediatric Hospital in Phnom Penh, FIDR had been working to create a hub for pediatric surgical practice and education in this country, with the goal of spreading its impact nationwide from here.
After achieving this goal over 20 year-cooperation, the project’s base was moved to Kratie Province. Efforts are underway to establish a system at Kratie Provincial Referral Hospital that ensures pediatric surgical patients could receive timely and appropriate care. Given the hospital's strategic location as a transportation hub in the region, our efforts are also being made to strengthen collaboration not only within the province but with neighboring provinces as well, aiming to build a wide-reaching medical network that supports patient care across the region.
